Tempo-Traveller Carrying Devotees from Barmer Collides with Stationary Truck on Bathinda-Dabwali Highway; Police Launch Investigation

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of four pilgrims from Rajasthan and left eight others injured after a tempo-traveller carrying devotees to the Amarnath Yatra rammed into a stationary truck on the Bathinda-Dabwali Highway in Punjab on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred near Jodhpur Romana village in Bathinda district when the group of devotees from Balotra in Rajasthan's Barmer district was travelling towards the Amarnath Cave Shrine in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, where the annual pilgrimage is scheduled to begin on July 3.

Police and emergency rescue teams rushed to the accident site immediately after receiving information about the collision and shifted the injured passengers to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Collision with Stationary Truck Turns Fatal

According to police officials, the tempo-traveller crashed into a truck that was parked along the roadside on the Bathinda-Dabwali Highway.

The impact of the collision severely damaged the front portion of the vehicle, trapping several passengers inside. Rescue personnel, along with local residents, worked to evacuate the injured and recover the victims from the wreckage.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether road safety norms were followed.

Two Married Couples Among the Deceased

Police identified the four victims as two married couples from Rajasthan:

  • Mahinder Kumar
  • Manisha
  • Pankaj
  • Dimple

The deaths have cast a shadow over the pilgrimage, with families and fellow devotees mourning the loss of the travellers who were undertaking the sacred journey.

Officials said the bodies would be handed over to their families after post-mortem examinations and completion of legal formalities.

Eight Pilgrims Undergoing Treatment

Eight other passengers travelling in the tempo-traveller sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

The injured were admitted to nearby medical facilities, where doctors are providing treatment. Hospital authorities said the condition of the injured is being monitored closely, while police continue to collect information from survivors as part of the investigation.

Medical teams responded promptly after the accident, helping ensure timely emergency care.

Pilgrims Were Headed to Amarnath Shrine

The group was travelling to participate in the annual Amarnath Yatra, one of the country's most significant Hindu pilgrimages.

Every year, thousands of devotees travel to the Amarnath Cave in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir to offer prayers at the naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam.

The pilgrimage attracts participants from across India and is conducted under elaborate security, medical and logistical arrangements coordinated by central and state authorities.

This year's yatra is scheduled to commence on July 3, with authorities already deploying security personnel and setting up infrastructure for pilgrims.

Police Begin Investigation

Law enforcement agencies have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Officials are examining several aspects, including:

  • Whether the stationary truck was parked in compliance with traffic regulations.
  • Visibility and lighting conditions at the accident site.
  • The speed of the tempo-traveller at the time of impact.
  • Possible driver fatigue or mechanical issues.
  • Availability of warning signs or hazard indicators near the parked vehicle.

The findings will determine whether further legal action is required.

Road Safety During Pilgrimage Season

The incident highlights the importance of enhanced road safety measures during major pilgrimage seasons, when highways witness a sharp increase in long-distance passenger traffic.

Road safety experts recommend:

  • Strict enforcement against unsafe roadside parking.
  • Installation of reflective warning signs for stationary vehicles.
  • Mandatory rest breaks for drivers on long journeys.
  • Regular vehicle fitness inspections.
  • Enhanced highway patrolling during pilgrimage periods.
  • Increased awareness among transport operators regarding safe driving practices.

Such measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving passenger vehicles.

Authorities Appeal for Safe Travel

With thousands of pilgrims expected to travel to Jammu and Kashmir in the coming weeks, authorities have urged transport operators and drivers to prioritise safety.

Officials advised drivers to maintain prescribed speed limits, avoid fatigue, ensure vehicles are mechanically fit before departure and exercise extra caution during early morning and late-night travel.

Emergency response teams have also been placed on high alert along major pilgrimage routes to provide immediate assistance in case of accidents or medical emergencies.

Outlook

The fatal accident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with long-distance road travel during large religious pilgrimages. As preparations continue for the Amarnath Yatra, authorities are expected to strengthen highway safety monitoring, improve emergency response mechanisms and enhance coordination among transport, police and disaster management agencies.

The immediate focus remains on providing medical care to the injured, supporting the families of the deceased and completing a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
