Indians Spend Bigger on Summer Travel as Luxury Hotel Bookings Jump 108%

Premium Vacations, Bali Trips, Family Holidays and IPL Travel Drive India’s New Tourism Boom

Indian travellers are spending more on vacations than ever before, with luxury stays, international holidays, family trips, and experience-driven travel emerging as the biggest themes of the 2026 summer travel season.

According to new travel trends released by Cleartrip under its “Nation on Vacation” campaign, Indian consumers are increasingly treating vacations as lifestyle experiences rather than occasional seasonal breaks.

The report highlights strong growth across hotels, flights, group travel, and premium tourism categories, signalling a major shift in travel behaviour among Indian consumers.

Industry experts believe rising disposable incomes, post-pandemic lifestyle changes, growing digital adoption, and easier travel access are reshaping the country’s tourism and hospitality landscape.

Luxury Travel Sees Explosive Growth

The biggest highlight of the summer travel season was the sharp rise in luxury accommodation demand.

According to the report:

  • 5-star hotel bookings surged by 108.2 per cent
  • Overall hotel bookings rose more than 80 per cent
  • Air bookings increased over 20 per cent
  • Bus travel bookings climbed more than 35 per cent

The growth in premium stays significantly outpaced budget and mid-range hotel categories, showing that Indian travellers are increasingly willing to pay for comfort, premium services, and curated experiences.

Travel analysts say Indian consumers are no longer prioritising low-cost vacations alone. Instead, travellers are focusing on experiential holidays that include luxury resorts, premium hospitality, wellness retreats, entertainment experiences, and destination-focused travel.

Family and Group Vacations Make Strong Comeback

The summer season also witnessed a major revival in shared travel experiences.

Family hotel bookings jumped nearly 125 per cent, while overall family travel grew by almost 69 per cent. Group travel bookings also recorded strong growth of around 24 per cent.

Industry experts say multi-generational holidays, reunion trips, and group vacations are becoming increasingly popular as families prioritise spending quality time together.

The trend is benefiting hospitality companies, resorts, travel operators, airlines, and tourism-focused businesses across both domestic and international markets.

Many households now view travel as an important emotional and lifestyle investment rather than discretionary spending.

Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities Power Domestic Tourism

Domestic tourism remained extremely strong this summer, especially from smaller cities and emerging regional hubs.

Among the fastest-growing domestic destinations were:

  • Jaipur
  • Lucknow
  • Udaipur
  • Rishikesh
  • Varanasi

The Northeast region also emerged as a major tourism growth zone with increasing interest in destinations such as Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Imphal, and Agartala.

Improved air connectivity, better road infrastructure, and increasing traveller awareness are helping newer destinations attract tourists beyond traditional metro markets.

Bali, Dubai and Bangkok Remain Favourite International Destinations

International travel demand also remained strong during the season.

Bangkok emerged as the most-booked international destination overall, while younger travellers and Gen Z tourists preferred locations such as:

  • Bali
  • Phuket
  • Kuala Lumpur
  • Dubai
  • Singapore

Travel companies say international holidays are becoming more accessible for Indian consumers due to better flight connectivity, rising incomes, simplified visa processes, and aggressive promotional campaigns by global tourism destinations.

Cities such as Lisbon, Frankfurt, Milan, Riyadh, and Nairobi also witnessed rising travel demand.

Solo Travel and Experience-Led Tourism Gain Momentum

The report also pointed to growing confidence among solo travellers in India.

Domestic solo female travel increased by more than 21 per cent, reflecting rising independence and improved safety confidence among women travellers.

Meanwhile, international solo male travel recorded growth of nearly 36 per cent.

Another major trend was the rise of event-driven travel. Many travellers planned trips around sports, concerts, and live entertainment events, especially the Indian Premier League.

Industry experts say experiential tourism is now becoming one of the strongest drivers of travel spending globally, with consumers preferring memorable experiences over conventional sightseeing itineraries.

Digital Payments and Flexible Travel Options Rise

Travel payment behaviour also evolved significantly during the season.

Credit cards accounted for more than 63 per cent of domestic travel bookings and nearly 49 per cent of international reservations, highlighting the rapid growth of digital financial adoption in the travel sector.

Travellers also increasingly opted for flexible booking products, cancellation protection plans, loyalty rewards, and travel credits to manage uncertain schedules and changing travel preferences.

Industry analysts believe the latest summer travel trends reflect a long-term structural shift in India’s consumer economy, where travel is emerging as a key lifestyle and aspiration category supported by rising incomes, digital convenience, and changing consumption habits.
