The proposed 6,000 MW HVDC transmission project strengthens GE Vernova T&D India’s order visibility, while analysts remain positive on the company’s long-term growth prospects

Shares Rally Despite Weak Market Conditions

Shares of GE Vernova T&D India surged nearly 9 per cent in early trade after the company emerged as the lowest bidder, or L1 bidder, for a major transmission project floated by Power Grid Corporation of India.

The stock opened at ₹4,636.10 on the National Stock Exchange, compared with the previous close of ₹4,367.20, and touched an intraday high of ₹4,747.10. The rally came even as the broader market remained under pressure, with the Nifty 50 trading lower. The stock was also among the most actively traded counters during the session.

6,000 MW HVDC Transmission Project

According to the company’s exchange filing, Power Grid has informed GE Vernova T&D India that it is the L1 bidder for the design and establishment of a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV high-voltage direct-current, or HVDC, line-commutated converter terminal station.

The project will consist of two terminal stations, each with a capacity of 3,000 MW, and will help evacuate renewable power from Barmer II in Rajasthan to South Kalamb in Maharashtra. The scope includes design, equipment supply and execution over multiple years. However, the company has not disclosed the value of the proposed contract.

HVDC technology is used to transmit large volumes of electricity over long distances with lower transmission losses and greater control over power flows. The proposed corridor is therefore important for connecting renewable-energy generation zones with major power-consuming regions.

L1 Status Improves Order Visibility

Being declared the L1 bidder places GE Vernova T&D India at the front of the tender process. However, the status does not automatically mean that the final contract has been awarded.

Power Grid will still need to complete the required formalities before issuing a letter of award or signing the final agreement. Until then, the potential order should not be treated as a confirmed addition to the company’s order book.

Despite this qualification, analysts believe the project could materially improve GE Vernova T&D India’s revenue visibility. Emkay Global estimates that, after formal finalisation, the company’s order backlog could increase to around ₹280 billion, equivalent to approximately 4.2 times its trailing twelve-month revenue.

Renewable Energy Push Supports Growth

The proposed project comes at a time when India is expanding its interstate transmission network to support renewable-energy capacity addition. Solar and wind projects are often located far from industrial and urban demand centres, creating a need for high-capacity transmission corridors.

GE Vernova T&D India is positioned to benefit from this structural demand through its portfolio of transformers, reactors, switchgear, circuit breakers, HVDC systems and grid-automation solutions. The company also has opportunities in export markets, where utilities are investing in grid modernisation and renewable integration.

The broader transmission opportunity is supported by rising electricity consumption, increased renewable generation and the need to improve grid stability. However, the timing of project execution and the pace of order conversion will remain important for earnings growth.

Strong Balance Sheet Supports Capacity Expansion

Emkay has highlighted the company’s strong financial position, including net cash of approximately ₹2,930 crore at the end of the first quarter of FY27. Healthy operating cash flow provides flexibility to fund capital expenditure, meet additional working-capital requirements and pursue future growth opportunities.

GE Vernova T&D India is also investing in manufacturing capacity for HVDC valves, transformers and related equipment. These investments are expected to strengthen its ability to execute large domestic transmission projects and improve localisation across the supply chain.

The company’s first-quarter performance also reflected strong operational momentum. Net profit rose nearly 25 per cent year-on-year to ₹362.99 crore, while total income increased to ₹1,877.98 crore from ₹1,346.43 crore in the corresponding period. However, quarterly order bookings declined to ₹11.4 billion from ₹16.2 billion a year earlier, making large project wins important for sustaining future growth.

Analysts Retain Positive View

Emkay Global has retained its ‘Buy’ rating on GE Vernova T&D India and maintained a target price of ₹5,300. The target implies an upside of around 21 per cent from the previous closing price of ₹4,367.20.

The brokerage expects the company to benefit from strong domestic and export demand in the transmission and distribution segment. Nomura has also raised its target price, citing order-book visibility, grid-automation opportunities and the expansion of India’s power-transmission infrastructure.

Execution and Valuation Risks

The company’s L1 status has improved investor sentiment, but the final contract value, execution schedule and margin profile are yet to be disclosed. The project is expected to be implemented over several years, meaning its revenue contribution will be spread across multiple financial periods.

Investors must also consider the stock’s sharp rally and valuation. Delays in final contract awards, execution challenges, higher working-capital requirements and margin pressure could affect the pace of earnings growth. A strong order pipeline alone may not justify further valuation expansion unless the company demonstrates timely execution and healthy cash generation.

Market Outlook

GE Vernova T&D India’s emergence as the L1 bidder for the 6,000 MW HVDC project strengthens its long-term growth outlook and reinforces its position in India’s expanding power-transmission market. The company’s strong balance sheet, planned capacity expansion and global technology capabilities provide additional support.

However, the immediate market reaction appears to have factored in a meaningful portion of the expected benefit. Further upside will depend on the final award, contract value, execution margins and order conversion. Investors should track these developments closely before taking fresh positions after the sharp rally.
