Indian IT stocks extend their October rally, with the Nifty IT index rising 16% during the month; L&T Technology Services posts double-digit revenue growth, expands margins and reports more than $200 million in large deals, although a one-time gain boosts its reported quarterly profit.

Indian information technology stocks continued their strong upward momentum on Wednesday, October 21, with the Nifty IT index climbing around 2% to reach 32,314.35, its highest level since February 20, 2026. The rally came as investors responded positively to September-quarter earnings, improving deal visibility and renewed interest in established IT services companies amid volatility in global artificial intelligence-related stocks.

L&T Technology Services (LTTS) emerged as one of the session's biggest gainers, with its share price jumping as much as 15% to ₹4,143 on the National Stock Exchange following its second-quarter results for FY2026-27. The company reported higher revenue, improved operating margins and substantial large-deal wins, strengthening expectations of better business momentum in the second half of the financial year.

The IT sector's performance also stood out against the broader market. At approximately 9:30 AM, the Nifty IT index was up around 2%, compared with a gain of 0.86% in the Nifty 50. The latest advance extended a rally that has gathered pace throughout October.

Nifty IT Rallies 16% in October, Recovers From July Lows

The Nifty IT index has gained approximately 16% so far in October, supported by positive earnings reactions across several major technology companies. The index reached 32,314.35 during Wednesday's trading, marking its highest level since February 2026.

The index has also recovered around 26% from its 52-week low of 25,699.10, recorded on July 1, 2026. However, it remains below its 52-week high of 40,301.40, touched on February 3, 2026.

The rally has been broad-based among several large IT companies. During October, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) gained approximately 23%, while Tech Mahindra and Wipro advanced around 19% each. Infosys and Mphasis rose about 18% each, while HCL Technologies and Coforge gained approximately 15% and 12%, respectively.

Among engineering and technology services companies outside the core Nifty IT constituents, LTTS, Tata Elxsi, Zensar Technologies and Hexaware Technologies also recorded strong gains during the month.

These moves suggest that investors have been reassessing valuations and earnings prospects across the technology services sector following earlier weakness.

Why Investors Are Returning to Indian IT Stocks

One factor supporting the rally is the changing global technology investment environment. According to market commentary cited in the supplied report, concerns over valuations, financing requirements and the sustainability of spending on AI-related businesses have contributed to selling pressure in some global AI-linked stocks.

This shift may encourage investors to reconsider established Indian IT services companies, which offer exposure to enterprise technology spending, software modernisation, cloud services, engineering research and development, and AI implementation.

However, the relationship is not straightforward. A decline in global AI stocks does not automatically translate into higher earnings for Indian IT companies. Their performance continues to depend on client budgets, discretionary technology spending, deal conversion, pricing conditions and the ability to turn AI-related opportunities into profitable revenue.

For Indian IT firms, the key question is whether rising demand for AI services can offset slower spending in traditional technology segments and support sustainable growth.

LTTS Shares Jump 15% After Q2FY27 Results

L&T Technology Services reported a strong set of second-quarter results, triggering a sharp rally in its shares.

The company posted revenue of ₹3,040 crore, representing year-on-year growth of 12.1% compared with ₹2,713 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Reported net profit rose sharply, with the company's earnings disclosure and the market report presenting different growth figures. The reported result was approximately ₹548 crore, while the detailed earnings discussion cited a figure of ₹548.2 crore and year-on-year growth of 66.8%. The detailed analysis also indicated that profit included a one-time gain of ₹165 crore.

Excluding this one-time gain, profit growth was reported at approximately 16.5%. This distinction is important because the headline increase in net profit was substantially stronger than the underlying growth after adjusting for the exceptional item.

Investors should therefore assess LTTS's performance through recurring profitability, revenue growth, margins and future order execution rather than relying exclusively on the reported net profit increase.

Operating Margins Improve as Business Execution Strengthens

LTTS reported an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margin of 16.3%, representing an improvement of 60 basis points quarter-on-quarter and 220 basis points year-on-year.

The expansion indicates improved operating performance across business segments. The company also recorded constant-currency revenue growth of approximately 2.7% quarter-on-quarter, according to the cited brokerage commentary.

Margin performance will remain an important metric to watch in coming quarters. Engineering services companies must balance investments in new technologies, employee costs and delivery capabilities against pricing pressures and project execution requirements.

LTTS is targeting operating margins in the 16–17% range over the medium term. Maintaining this level while investing in AI capabilities and absorbing planned wage increases will be a key test of execution.

Large Deals Exceed $200 Million, With AI Accounting for More Than Half

A major positive from the quarter was LTTS's large-deal performance. The company reported total contract value (TCV) of more than $200 million in large deals, with the detailed brokerage update putting the figure at approximately $203 million.

AI-related engagements accounted for more than half of the large-deal total, highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence in engineering and technology services demand.

The reported wins included one deal worth $75 million, another exceeding $30 million, a $25 million contract and six deals valued at more than $10 million each.

Large contracts can improve revenue visibility, but their financial contribution typically depends on the pace of project execution and the timing of revenue recognition. Investors will be watching how quickly these wins translate into reported growth over the coming quarters.

The company also reported an increase of more than 25% year-on-year in its deal pipeline, according to brokerage commentary. This provides a potential source of future business, although a pipeline is not equivalent to signed contracts or guaranteed revenue.

Sustainability Leads Growth, While Mobility Holds Momentum

LTTS's sustainability business remained a key growth driver. Brokerage analysis indicated that the segment expanded 4.9% quarter-on-quarter and 13.4% year-on-year, contributing approximately 38% of revenue.

Demand in this segment was supported by projects involving data centres, the energy transition, robotics and AI-enabled automation, along with the execution of large deals secured over previous quarters.

The mobility business also maintained momentum, supported by demand across North American automotive, aerospace, rail and trucks and off-highway markets.

However, European automotive demand remained relatively subdued. Management expects conditions in the region to improve over the next nine to twelve months, although the timing and strength of any recovery remain uncertain.

The technology segment continued to face pressure following the scheduled ramp-down of a medical technology programme and delays in a subsequent phase. Growth in technology infrastructure and Semcon partly offset the weakness.

Management expects the segment to remain muted in the third quarter, with a potential recovery later in the financial year as new engagements ramp up.

AI and Engineering Intelligence Could Support Future Growth

LTTS is seeking to expand its position in engineering intelligence, where the use of AI, data and advanced engineering tools is creating new opportunities.

The company reported annualised engineering intelligence-led revenue of approximately $120 million. Its strategy includes the EIOne platform, AI ecosystem partnerships and opportunities linked to data centre engineering.

AI-related demand can create opportunities in areas such as product design, simulation, automation, infrastructure optimisation and industrial engineering. However, the commercial impact will depend on customers moving beyond pilot projects towards larger, recurring engagements.

The company's ability to convert these opportunities into profitable contracts will be important for assessing the sustainability of its growth.

Management expects the second half of FY2026-27 to outperform the first half in both sequential and year-on-year growth terms, supported by large-deal ramp-ups, a healthy pipeline and improving opportunities across regions.

Key Risks Investors Should Monitor

Despite the positive results and strong share-price reaction, several factors could influence LTTS's future performance.

One-time profit gain: The ₹165 crore exceptional gain materially increased reported profit. Underlying earnings growth provides a clearer picture of recurring business performance.

Technology segment weakness: Continued softness in the technology business could limit overall growth until delayed programmes and new engagements begin contributing more meaningfully.

Wage and operating costs: Planned wage increases could affect margins, with brokerage commentary estimating a potential impact of 50–80 basis points in the third quarter.

Execution of large deals: Strong contract wins are positive, but delays in ramp-ups or project execution could postpone revenue realisation.

Global spending uncertainty: Demand for engineering and IT services remains exposed to global economic conditions, client budgets and changes in technology investment priorities.

Valuation risk: A sharp share-price rally can increase expectations for future earnings. Investors should compare the current valuation with sustainable growth, cash generation and execution prospects before making investment decisions.

Market Outlook

The Nifty IT index's 16% October rally reflects improving sentiment towards Indian technology services companies, supported by quarterly earnings and renewed interest in businesses with exposure to AI implementation and engineering services.

LTTS's results contain several positive indicators: revenue growth of 12.1%, an EBIT margin of 16.3%, more than $200 million in large deals and a pipeline that points to potential future business. Nevertheless, the one-time gain included in quarterly profit and the weakness in its technology segment warrant closer examination.

For the sector, the sustainability of the rally will depend on whether earnings momentum broadens across companies and translates into stronger revenue growth, deal conversion and cash generation. For LTTS, investors will particularly watch the execution of large contracts, the recovery of weaker business segments and the company's ability to protect margins as costs rise.

The recent share-price surge signals strong market optimism, but future returns will depend on operating performance and valuation discipline. Investors should evaluate the company's fundamentals and risk profile rather than treating short-term momentum as a guarantee of continued gains.
