State Government Aims To Improve Coastal Infrastructure And Support Local Fishermen In Ratnagiri District

The Maharashtra government is planning to develop a modern fishing jetty at Burondi village in Ratnagiri district’s Dapoli taluka as part of efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector and improve coastal infrastructure in the Konkan region.

State Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said the government is committed to addressing long-standing issues faced by local fishermen and creating better facilities to support fishing-related economic activities in the area.

The announcement was made during a review meeting held to discuss the proposed fishing jetty project at Burondi, a coastal village known for its active fishing community and marine trade activities.

According to officials, the proposed jetty is expected to provide safer docking facilities for fishing boats, improve fish handling and transportation systems, and support faster movement of marine produce to nearby markets. Authorities believe the project could significantly improve livelihoods for local fishermen by reducing operational difficulties during rough weather and peak fishing seasons.

The government is also expected to examine infrastructure requirements such as cold storage facilities, fish auction centres, fuel stations and improved road connectivity around the proposed jetty area. These developments are aimed at increasing the efficiency of the fisheries supply chain and boosting economic activity in coastal villages around Dapoli.

Officials said Maharashtra has been focusing on strengthening fisheries infrastructure across coastal districts to increase fish production, improve exports and generate employment opportunities. The Konkan coastline remains one of the state’s key marine economy zones, contributing significantly to seafood supply and traditional fishing activities.

Local fishing communities have reportedly welcomed the government’s move, saying a dedicated jetty at Burondi could improve safety, reduce congestion at existing facilities and create long-term growth opportunities for small fishermen and related businesses in the region.
