Prime Minister performs sacred rituals at Somnath Temple, attends spiritual ceremonies marking 75 years of the restored shrine
Narendra Modi on Monday participated in grand religious ceremonies at the iconic Somnath Temple as part of the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav celebrations, commemorating 75 years of the inauguration of the restored temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
After receiving a warm welcome from devotees and local residents during a roadshow in Somnath, the Prime Minister entered the temple premises and performed ‘Maha Pooja’ and ‘Jalabhishek’ rituals amid Vedic chanting and traditional ceremonies.
The temple complex witnessed heavy footfall as thousands of devotees gathered to witness the spiritual event and celebrate the historic milestone of one of India’s most revered Jyotirlingas.
Grand ‘Kumbhabhishek’ Ceremony Held
One of the key highlights of the celebrations was the grand ‘Kumbhabhishek’ ritual, during which holy water collected from major pilgrimage sites across India was ceremonially sprinkled over the temple’s towering shikhar using a crane.
Priests and temple authorities described the ceremony as a symbol of national spiritual unity and devotion. The event reflected the cultural significance of Somnath Temple, which has long been regarded as a symbol of faith, resilience, and India’s civilizational heritage.
Somnath Temple’s Historical Importance
The Somnath Temple holds a special place in Indian history and Hindu spirituality. The temple has been rebuilt multiple times after invasions and destruction over centuries. Its reconstruction after Independence became a landmark cultural and national project supported by leaders including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The restored temple was inaugurated in 1951 by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and has since emerged as one of the country’s most visited pilgrimage destinations.
Massive Arrangements for Devotees and Tourists
Authorities made extensive arrangements for crowd management, security, and tourism facilities during the Amrut Mahotsav celebrations. Special illumination, cultural programs, devotional music events, and spiritual gatherings have also been organized in and around the temple town.
Officials expect the celebrations to significantly boost religious tourism in Gujarat, especially in the coastal Somnath region, which has witnessed increasing infrastructure development in recent years.
Air Show and Cultural Events Draw Crowds
Apart from temple rituals, Prime Minister Modi also witnessed a special air show and cultural performances organized as part of the celebrations. The evening events showcased Gujarat’s cultural heritage, spiritual traditions, and maritime history, attracting large crowds of tourists and devotees.
The Somnath Amrut Mahotsav is expected to continue over the coming days with several religious, cultural, and public events planned across the temple town.
